Copper tales!
He might look like a simple guy, but Deccan Chargers left handed batsman JP Duminy is one who loves the high flying life. He considers Bengaluru to be one of the best cities of India. Many might think that this South African is not in the best form this season, but Duminy says, “I personally think I’m in good form off late. As for being in Deccan Chargers, I have not got many opportunities to bat for long. I’ve had a really good international season. I feel that I am in a good space.”
Copper, as he is nicknamed by dear ones, is one strong chap who takes failure in his stride. He says, “There is still a mathematical chance that we can make it to the semi finals. We got to look forward to that. You’re not going to go any further without failure. That’s what builds you as a person and your character. As a professional, you have to find yourself to move and pick yourself up. We have to dig further for ways to move on.”
Duminy has been a part of Mumbai Indians in earlier seasons of the IPL. He says, “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being a part of Mumbai Indians and Deccan Chargers. The upside is that you get to play with different kinds of players, mingle with people of different cultures. I got to play with big name players in Mumbai Indians like Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya and Harbhajan Singh. With DC, Cameron White and Sangakkara are fantastic. It’s a mixture of youth and experience. We thoroughly enjoy our time together.”
Copper is a fun loving guy who says that if he was not a cricketer, he would be a rockstar. More than anything in India, he expressed his love for the food. He says, “The food here is fantastic. My home ground is Hyderabad and its specialty is biryani. I love it and the butter chicken. I enjoy the different cultures in this country.” It is not only Duminy who is making the most of it in India but also his wife, Sue. He says, “She is travelling with me and she loves it here. She enjoys the shopping, the market and the malls.”
Talking about his love for Hyderabad and Deccan Chargers, Duminy thoroughly enjoys being around team owner Gayatri Reddy. He says, “Gayatri is pretty close to the team. She enjoys being part of the team and is fun to be around and always has a smile on her face.” Duminy is great buddies with all his teammates as well. He says, “We understand each other a bit more after interacting in the changing room. Some guys don’t speak English as well as others, It is about finding a way to connect with anybody and is always great to win and then there is a lot more to share in common.” One person who Duminy is very inspired by is Brian Lara. “He is definitely my cricketing icon,” he says.
Another aspect of the IPL that Duminy thoroughly enjoys is the after parties. He says, “I’ve been to a couple of after parties now. These signature parties are fun to be at.” Duminy’s ideal holiday would be in Maldives with his wife. If you ever happen to screen him, now, at home or when he is on a holiday, be sure to find his iPod and computer.
