T. Suman - Exclusive Interview
For Tirumalasetti Suman life has moved quickly in the last week. From an average Ranji Trophy cricketer for Hyderabad the 25-year-old has carved a niche for himself in just a matter of two outings to the middle in the IPL. “This has been an amazing experience. To be around such big names and also get a chance to compete against them is a dream come true,” said Suman during a chat with this newspaper.
The domestic scene in India can be misleading. Runs in benign conditions have often painted the wrong picture. Youngsters ho came here on the back of a good first class season are struggling and so are a few who had good success in the IPL in India. For Suman the stint in South Africa has been fruitful. Five seasons with the Hyderabad Ranji team has toughed him. “My stint with the India under-19 team gave me the belief I can play at any level and I learnt more by playing Ranji cricket. But the key to performing well here has a lot to do with preparation as batting requires a different approach,” noted Suman.
Suman was not a part of the Deccan Chargers last year. It was not until he impressed coach Darren Lehmann in the practice games was he sure of an IPL contract. “I wanted to be a part of the IPL. I missed the cut last year. There was a selection trail where 15 players were short listed. Only two batting slots were available and I had to do well in the practice games to get the nod. I made 40 in each game and Lehmann decided to go ahead with me and wicket keeper Abhinav,” said Abhinav.
Inspite of all the promise Suman was drafted to the XI only after Ravi Teja met with an injury. V.V.S. Laxman’s failure allowed him to stay. Replacing a big name can have an adverse effect but Suman was not bothered by that prospect. “I have always looked up to him. He has added a lot to my game with lots of valuable inputs. I was not even thinking on the line of replacing Laxman. I just wanted to go and play my game and I think that ahs helped.”
Suman has countered conditions well. This is the fruit he is reaping for the 45 days of hard work he had put in Hyderabad before coming here. “The moment we knew the IPL was shifted our mode of preparation changed. “I spoke to a few senior players for their advice. I always have liked bounce as I play my shots better when the ball comes on faster. I worked on my horizontal bat shots as they would be productive here. Started practicing against the bowling machine and also did some marked practice. It is all proving to be useful,” explained Suman.
A few knockdowns sessions in the nets along with Adam Gilchrist also widened Suman’s range of strokes. For a batsman who has a slightly angled back lift the bat comes down straight. “I know it is not conventional but that is the way I have batted since I was a kid. Gilchrist helped me work around it,” said Suman.
South Africa has appealed to most players who are here for the first time and Suman is no different. “Herschelle Gibbs is our tour guide. The visit to Sun City was amazing. The beaches here are fantastic. I have found a new interest in para gliding and water slides. The feel here has been out of the world. We have been enjoying ourselves both on and off the field,” added Suman.

Suman, you are doing tremendous job for Chargers keep it up.
Play long innings and don’t lose your wicket in 9th (or) 10th over, most of the teams are deploying their spinners from 11th over may be Yummy for you.
Play drives and ground strokes along with aerial shots. If you can score two fifties in next matches definitely you would be strong contender for Team India.
Continue same momentum and big scores in domestic circuit
Bring variation while bowling so that you could be unpredictable.
Dominate with Bat & Ball; feel responsible while performing any job.
All the best, Hope to see you in India XI

Hi Ra suman,
U grew upfront as a cricketing icon from your native place Chirala/Prakasam and ofcourse as a true inspiration for the budding cricket learners through out A.P.
I am really puffed up to see our Suman performing around IPL players who is a relative of mine and also adding glitters to the family name "Tirumalasetty" at global level.
You are at your best now playing a good cricket, but be careful when you are playing offside cut shorts.
Try your best for D.C victory Dude!
